Report a Recruiter or Agent

Report a recruiter or agent who has defrauded you, charged illegal fees, or misrepresented a job — your report helps protect other workers too.

Fraudulent recruitment — fake jobs, illegal fees, and contracts that do not match what was promised — causes some of the most serious harm in labour migration, often before a worker has even left home. If this has happened to you, reporting it does two things: it opens a case for you, and it can protect other workers from the same recruiter.

What counts as recruitment fraud

  • Being charged a fee that is higher than the law allows, or a fee for a job that does not exist.
  • A job, wage, or contract that turns out to be different from what you were promised.
  • An agent who is not licensed, or who claims a false connection to ILSI or a government agency.
  • An agent who pressures you to sign documents you cannot read or understand.

What to include in your report

The agent or agency's name, any licence number they gave you, how much you paid and how, any messages or documents you have, and what was promised versus what actually happened. You do not need every detail to submit a report — submit what you have.

What happens after you report

ILSI reviews every report. Verified reports are added to our scam alerts so other workers can check before they pay a fee, and serious cases are referred to the relevant licensing authority or law enforcement. If you have lost money and want to pursue recovery, we can also refer you to a lawyer — see find a lawyer.

If you are still in contact with the recruiter

If you have an upcoming payment or meeting scheduled with a recruiter you now suspect is fraudulent, do not pay any further money and try to avoid confrontation until you have spoken with ILSI. Keep all future messages and do not delete your existing conversation history, even if you feel embarrassed about what has happened — nothing about being targeted by a fraudulent recruiter reflects badly on you.

Recovering lost money

Recovery of money already paid to a fraudulent recruiter is not always possible, but it is often more achievable than workers expect, particularly where a licensed agency's name was used and that agency has its own obligations to investigate. ILSI's caseworkers will give you an honest assessment of your options once they have reviewed your report.
