New Corridor Briefing Published on the Nepal-to-GCC Labour Pathway
ILSI's research team has published its first full corridor profile, examining the scale, legal framework and key risks of the Nepal-to-GCC labour migration pathway.
ILSI has published its first complete corridor profile, covering the Nepal-to-GCC labour migration pathway that carries more Nepali workers than any other single route. The profile draws on ILSI's early casework, published government sources, and review by the organisation's Advisory Council and Gulf-based legal panel members.
What the profile covers
The corridor profile sets out the sectoral composition of Nepali employment across Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, a general overview of the legal frameworks governing recruitment and residency in each state, and a detailed assessment of the most commonly documented risks, including recruitment fee overcharging, contract substitution, passport retention and heat-related occupational hazards.
Dr Prakash Man Shrestha, ILSI's Director of Research & Policy, said the profile was designed to be useful to three different audiences at once. "A prospective worker can use this to understand what to expect and what to check before they travel. A government official can use it to see where policy attention is most needed. And an employer can use it to understand where their due-diligence effort should be concentrated," he said.
Part of a wider series
The Nepal-GCC profile is the first in a planned series covering all four of ILSI's pilot corridors, with profiles for Nepal-Malaysia, Nepal-Korea and Nepal-UK to follow as research is finalised. Each profile will be reviewed periodically to reflect regulatory changes in destination countries and updated risk patterns observed through ILSI's growing casework.
The full corridor profile, including embassy contact information and indicative wage data by sector, is available now on ILSI's development pages, alongside a shorter policy brief version intended for government and employer audiences.
