A Safe Return Home from Kuwait After an Unsafe Workplace
An ILSI member working in Kuwait was supported to return home safely after raising serious safety concerns about her workplace that her employer failed to address.
A worker, 31, from Sindhupalchok travelled to Kuwait to work in a household role, and within a few months began experiencing conditions she felt were unsafe, including being asked to perform tasks well beyond what had been agreed in her contract and having very limited ability to leave the household or contact her family freely.
She had registered as an ILSI member before departure and had kept the Kuwait helpline number, which she was eventually able to call using a phone briefly accessible to her. A caseworker took her situation seriously immediately, recognising the combination of restricted communication and expanded duties as significant warning signs, and began working on a safe return plan the same day.
ILSI's caseworker coordinated with the Nepali Embassy in Kuwait City and, given the sensitivity of the situation, worked carefully to avoid escalating risk to the worker while arrangements were made. This involved confirming a safe point of contact and travel arrangements before any direct approach was made to her employer regarding her departure.
