Recovering Three Months of Unpaid Wages in Qatar
An ILSI member working in facilities management in Doha recovered three months of unpaid wages after his employer repeatedly delayed payment, with support from ILSI's Doha legal panel.
A worker, 29, from Nawalparasi joined ILSI shortly before travelling to Doha to take up a facilities management role. For the first four months, his salary arrived on time, but payments then began to slip, first by a week, then by several weeks, until he was owed three full months of wages with no clear explanation from his employer beyond vague promises that payment was "coming soon."
Unsure whether raising the issue formally would put his job at risk, he initially tried to resolve the matter directly with his supervisor, without success. When a colleague mentioned the ILSI helpline, he called the Doha line and explained his situation to a caseworker, who took down the details of his contract, his employer's registration information, and a record of the missed payments he had noted on his phone.
ILSI's Doha-based legal panel lawyer reviewed the case and identified that the delayed payments were already inconsistent with wage protection requirements applicable to his employment. Rather than pursuing an immediate formal complaint, the caseworker first supported the worker in sending a documented written request for payment to his employer, referencing the applicable requirements, which is often enough to prompt resolution without escalation. When that did not resolve the matter within two weeks, the case was escalated with support from the legal panel to the relevant labour authority.
